Inspection and equipment check

Periodic inspection

Fall protection, support, and evacuation equipment must undergo a periodic inspection every 12 months. These devices should be inspected more frequently if their usage causes significant wear or if they are used in harsh conditions.

The periodic inspection must be carried out by a competent individual who is familiar with the applicable regulatory requirements for regular inspections, the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines, and follows the inspection methods established by the manufacturer. For some more complex devices, regular inspections may only be conducted by the manufacturer or a person or organization authorized by them.

Fall protection team completed training

Competent person for periodic inspections

According to the European standard EN 365:2004, a competent person must be familiar with the applicable periodic inspection requirements and the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions for the relevant part, subsystem, or system.

Manufacturers may provide training to qualify individuals for periodic inspections of personal protective equipment or other devices or to ensure their competence. This is particularly necessary when a device’s complexity or updates require knowledge crucial for disassembly, reassembly, and assessment from a safety perspective.

Pre-use inspection

The inspection of fall protection equipment is crucial because the user’s safety depends on the effectiveness and durability of the equipment. In addition to periodic inspections by a competent person, the user of fall protection equipment must inspect their equipment before each use.

The user must be aware of what to look for during the inspection. Requirements and recommendations for pre-use inspections can be found in the specific product’s user manual, which outlines the equipment’s characteristics and the criteria for assessing its functionality. The inspection doesn’t need to be time-consuming, but it should be thorough.

The requirements for regular inspections and repairs of fall protection and other personal protective equipment are outlined in the European standard EN 365:2004.

Removal of fall protection equipment from use

Fall protection equipment must be inspected by a competent person if there is any doubt about its suitability for safe use or if the equipment has been used in arresting a fall. In such cases, the equipment must be immediately removed from use and may not be used again until a competent person has provided written confirmation of its usability.

Additional recommendations for removing equipment from use are outlined in the specific product’s user manual. The manual also specifies the product’s lifespan. Most textile products in the Kukkumiskaitse.ee range (such as safety harnesses, lifelines, etc.) have a maximum lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture. For more detailed information, please refer to the product’s user manual.
